When Thinking Becomes a Way of Feeling Safe
Thinking helps us solve problems, prepare and make decisions. But sometimes thinking takes on another job: helping us feel safe. What happens when the brain learns that thinking itself can feel protective—and how do we know when we’re solving a problem versus trying to think until we feel safe enough to stop?
I want to feel safe.
As a matter of fact, wanting to feel safe is biologically built into me. Humans are remarkably good at noticing what might matter, what might require our attention, and what might possibly become a problem. We learn from what happens to us. We anticipate, prepare and make predictions. Often, we are responding to information long before we have consciously sat down and decided what to do with it.
That is useful. It helps us cross streets without getting hit by cars, remember that the stove might still be on, notice when something feels off with someone we love, prepare for weather, pay bills, plan ahead, and eventually make our way home to whatever home means for us—our partner, our kids, our furry friends, our best friend, or maybe just the couch we have been thinking about since 2:00 in the afternoon.
Thinking helps keep us safe.
But what happens when we get home, lock the door, put down our keys and our brain keeps going? What happens when thinking itself becomes one of the ways we try to create safety? For people who struggle with anxiety, worry or OCD, thinking itself can sometimes begin to function as a safety behavior.
The little CEO behind your eyes
I think we tend to imagine ourselves as being in charge of our brains. There is me, and then there is my brain.
I am apparently the CEO, sitting somewhere behind my eyes issuing sensible instructions: We are home now. Everything is fine. We can stop thinking about this. And then somewhere down the hall, an employee we absolutely do not remember hiring says, Great. Anyway, I have seventeen additional scenarios I'd like you to review.
Our brains don't actually work according to this organizational chart.
We consciously choose some of our thinking, of course. But human learning does not require us to deliberately teach ourselves every lesson we acquire. We learn associations. We learn what tends to predict what. We learn which responses helped before. And we can learn all of this without ever announcing to ourselves that learning is happening.
That is where thinking gets interesting.
Because every time we think about a problem, there is the obvious information we're processing. But our experience may also be teaching us something about what thinking does for us.
Imagine something makes you anxious. You think about it, research it, make a plan, replay the conversation, check one more thing, and eventually you feel a little better. Not necessarily completely better. Just enough.
Your brain has now had an experience that roughly looks like: Something felt threatening → I thought about it → I felt safer.
Then it happens again. Something feels uncertain, you think, and you feel a little more prepared.
Again: Uncertainty → thinking → relief.
We don't need to consciously decide, I shall now use thinking as my preferred threat-management strategy. The association can develop through experience.
Clinical models of anxiety have described this for decades. People can develop positive beliefs about worrying as a useful coping strategy—for example, that it helps them prepare or deal with possible problems. In generalized anxiety, worry itself can become a coping strategy rather than merely an unpleasant symptom. [1]
In obsessive-compulsive problems, the same thing can happen with mental behaviors. Compulsions aren't always visible. Reviewing, analyzing, mentally checking, neutralizing or trying to reach certainty can function much like behaviors we can see. Experimental research on neutralizing intrusive thoughts found that neutralizing was followed by greater discomfort, stronger urges to neutralize, and greater difficulty stopping the behavior later—one example of how a mental response can become part of a self-reinforcing pattern. In other words:
Thinking can be something we do.
And sometimes, it can become something we do to feel safer.
Except thinking is also incredibly useful
This is where we have to be careful, because the answer is obviously not: stop thinking.
That would be a remarkably poor evolutionary strategy.
There are plenty of things we should think about. If your bank account does not contain enough money to cover everything this month, thinking about that is useful. If your child is struggling, trying to understand what is happening is useful. If something goes wrong with your house, gathering information before attacking the plumbing with a wrench is generally advisable.
Thinking lets us solve problems, anticipate consequences and make decisions. That's part of why overthinking can feel productive—sometimes thinking really does produce something useful.
Research on repetitive thought also makes an important distinction here: repeated thinking is not inherently harmful. Sometimes returning to a problem helps us understand it, learn from it or make a better plan. At other times, repetitive negative thinking becomes difficult to disengage from and is associated with anxiety and depression. [3]
So maybe the important question isn't how much am I thinking?
Maybe it is:
What job is the thinking doing?
Thinking that helps us move
Sometimes thinking has somewhere to go.
There is a problem. You gather information, consider your options, make a decision and create a plan. Maybe you change the plan once or twice because you're a human being and apparently we enjoy making things complicated. But eventually, something happens. The thinking leads to action, understanding or a decision and it can finish. I think of this as thinking for navigation. We're trying to understand where we are so we can decide what direction to move.
Then there is another kind.
You think about the problem and feel slightly better. Then another possibility appears, so you think about that too. You feel slightly better again. Then but what if... appears, and suddenly the meeting has been reconvened. There are charts. Someone has opened a spreadsheet and the CEO has absolutely lost control of the company.
The problem is no longer simply that there is something left to figure out. The thinking has quietly been assigned another job:
Make me feel safe enough to stop.
And that is a very difficult assignment.
Because certainty is an impossible performance review
We've talked before about why uncertainty can feel so uncomfortable. Uncertainty is strongly associated with worry across anxiety problems. A large 2026 meta-analysis involving 28,693 participants found a particularly strong relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and worry, with meaningful associations across generalized anxiety, OCD, social anxiety, PTSD and other anxiety presentations. [4]
This matters because there is almost always another question available.
You can research a medical concern and learn a great deal, but can you know with absolute certainty what will happen? You can replay a conversation and decide that you probably didn't offend someone, but can you know exactly what they thought afterward? You can make a careful financial plan, but can you guarantee no unexpected expense will occur? You can think through every possible way your child might handle something, but can you control what will actually happen?
At some point, useful thinking reaches the edge of available information.
But if the job of thinking has become eliminate uncertainty, there is no obvious stopping point.
There is always one more angle, one more search, one more scenario, one more check, one more conversation with yourself in which you explain once again why everything is probably okay.
And sometimes it works. For a while.
Which is exactly why the pattern can become so convincing.
“See? Good thing we kept thinking.”
This may be one of the more frustrating things about anxious thinking. Sometimes it produces something useful. You are lying in bed going through tomorrow for the fifteenth time and suddenly remember, Oh. I forgot to send that email.
And somewhere inside your brain:
SEE?! Good thing I kept us awake.
It is easy to see how a strategy earns job security.
The problem is that the brain doesn't necessarily separate the useful tenth minute from the unnecessary next hour. It experiences a strategy that occasionally pays off. But when we're already carrying a significant mental load, all of that monitoring, remembering and anticipating adds up.
Research on worry suggests that it can serve several protective-seeming functions. It may feel like preparation or like doing something about a problem. For some people with generalized anxiety, research on the Contrast Avoidance Model suggests that worry can also maintain negative emotion in a way that reduces the sharp emotional contrast of moving from calm into an unexpected negative event—they remain somewhat braced instead. There is a strange logic to that:
If I stay prepared for something bad, maybe nothing can catch me completely off guard.
Not pleasant. But protective. At least from the brain's point of view.
Maybe you're not trying to find the answer anymore
This is the distinction I keep coming back to. Sometimes we are thinking because there really is something useful left to figure out. And sometimes we are thinking because figuring feels safer than not knowing.
Those experiences can look remarkably similar.
You could sit at the same kitchen table, with the same laptop open, researching the exact same question. In one version, you find the information you need and make a decision. In the other, each answer creates another question because the thing you are actually searching for isn't information anymore.
It is the feeling that nothing bad can happen. And no search result can provide that. That is when thinking can become exhausting.
Not because thinking is bad. Not because you are doing anxiety wrong. Not because you lack enough self-control to tell your brain to knock it off.
But because an extraordinarily useful human ability has taken on a job it may not be able to complete.
What has your brain learned that thinking does?
We spend a lot of time asking ourselves about the content of our thoughts: Is this true? What if this happens? What should I do? What does this mean? Those questions can matter.
But there is another one I think is worth asking:
What is all of this thinking doing for me right now?
Is it helping me understand something, make a decision or create a plan? Or is it helping me feel, even temporarily, less vulnerable to uncertainty?
That isn't a test you have to pass and you don't need to analyze your analysis until we have somehow created an essay about overthinking that causes you to overthink your overthinking…that would be unfortunate branding. It is simply another piece of information. Because sometimes the most useful thing we can learn about a thought isn't whether the thought is correct. It is why our mind keeps returning to it.
And maybe the question isn't always, Why can't I stop thinking about this?
Maybe sometimes it is:
Am I still trying to solve the problem—or am I trying to think until I finally feel safe enough to stop?
There is an important difference.
One kind of thinking helps us navigate uncertainty. The other may be asking thinking to make uncertainty disappear.
And perhaps understanding which job we've given our thoughts is where we begin.

The Mental Load No One Talks About
You handle something, so you learn about it. Then something else needs your attention, so you learn about that too. Eventually, your brain starts trying to make you the expert on everything. There’s just one problem: that isn’t possible.
It’s exhausting.
Not just having a lot to do. Not just being busy. There’s another kind of mental load that can build when you’re the person who needs to know what to do.
Something happens with your kid, so you research it. Something comes up financially, so you learn about that. Someone you love is struggling, so you start trying to understand what might help. There’s a problem at work, something happening with the house, an insurance question, a medical decision, a school issue, a relationship problem.
And somewhere along the way, your brain starts trying to make you an expert on everything.
Which would be an impressive plan if it were remotely possible.
It isn’t.
Knowing starts to feel like being responsible
There’s a reason information can feel so useful when something matters to us. Knowing more can help us make better decisions. It can reduce ambiguity. It can give us a sense of direction when we aren't entirely sure what to do next.
So we learn.
We research the diagnosis. Read the reviews. Compare the options. Look up the side effects. Figure out the insurance policy. Learn the school system. Understand the mortgage. Research the contractor. Read about the medication. Figure out what that warning light means.
Sometimes that's exactly what needs to happen. The problem isn't learning. The problem is what can quietly happen afterward. Your brain discovers that knowing things helps you handle things. And that's a pretty useful lesson. Until it becomes:
I need to know enough to make sure everything turns out okay.
Now information isn't simply information anymore. It has become part of how you carry responsibility.
And the more responsibility you carry, the more things your brain decides you probably ought to understand.
So you keep opening tabs
Some of them are literal. Many aren't.
There are the things you need to do, the things you're waiting to hear about, the things you need to remember later, the things that might become problems, and the things you should probably research because you don't know enough about them yet.
Then there are the people.
What they need. What they're feeling. What you need to remember about them. Whether something seems off. Whether you should check in. Whether you handled that conversation correctly.
And because life doesn't politely wait for you to finish one category before introducing another, all of these things begin existing at the same time.
Your brain becomes a browser with 47 tabs open. One is playing music. You have no idea which one.
And somehow you're also researching whether that weird noise coming from the dishwasher means you need a new dishwasher.
This is where something that initially looked like competence can start becoming cognitive overload.
Your brain was never supposed to be the entire infrastructure
Human cognition has limits.
Working memory—the system we use to temporarily hold and manipulate information—is remarkably useful, but it is not infinite. Attention is limited. Switching repeatedly between tasks and categories carries a cognitive cost. Keeping future intentions active requires mental resources too.
Which means the brain you're asking to remember the pediatrician appointment is the same brain you're asking to think through the work problem, notice that your partner seems unusually quiet, decide what's for dinner, remember the email you haven't answered, evaluate whether that symptom warrants a doctor's appointment, and figure out why the car is making that noise.
None of those things necessarily breaks the system. That's part of what makes this load difficult to see. There may never be one enormous thing. Instead, there are hundreds of small things requiring tiny pieces of attention. And eventually those tiny pieces add up. You forget something you normally wouldn't forget. You walk into a room and can't remember why you're there. Someone asks you a relatively simple question and you feel irrationally irritated because you genuinely cannot tolerate being asked to make one more decision. You reread the same paragraph three times. You sit down to rest and remember six things. You become strangely overwhelmed by something that normally wouldn't bother you.
And sometimes we interpret these moments as evidence that something has changed about us.
Why can't I handle things like I used to?
Maybe because you're trying to run too much through one brain.
Eventually, you short out
Not literally, of course. But there's something wonderfully accurate about the phrase.
Because eventually the brain that has been asked to monitor, remember, anticipate, research, decide, organize and understand everything starts becoming less effective at doing all of it.
The irony is brutal. The more overwhelmed we become, the more we may try to compensate by becoming more prepared.
Another list. Another search. Another system. Another hour researching. Another attempt to finally get everything organized enough that our brain can relax.
But there may not be an organizational system capable of solving a problem created by believing you need to personally hold all of it. At some point the question changes.
It isn't:
How do I get better at carrying this?
It becomes:
Why does all of this require me in the first place?
Because some things absolutely do.
Some things deserve our attention, our learning and our care.
But perhaps not everything requires our expertise.
Maybe you can hire the plumber without understanding plumbing, ask the doctor a question without reading seventeen medical papers first, someone else can remember the appointment, another adult can solve the problem they discovered, you can make a decision with the information you currently have instead of searching until uncertainty disappears, and maybe "I don't know" doesn't always need to become a research project.
And maybe competence isn't knowing how to handle everything.
Sometimes competence is recognizing what doesn't need to live in your head anymore.
Because your brain is extraordinary.
But it was never supposed to be the expert on everything.
And it was definitely never supposed to be the entire infrastructure.
